“Television is in its infancy,” he said in a weekend interview. “I don't mean technologically, I mean socially.

Television could be a terrific value for human purposes. It could help bring world peace. But it is not used that way. There is too much violence, too much crime.

   People are hypnotized by it. They look at it all the time. It's contaminating our society.” (p. 1-C)

Additional context note: Zworykin voiced his concerns about the use of his television technology for several decades. In a 1954 interview with the New York Times, he stated flatly: “Television as entertainment I don't like. I looked upon it as an extension of human sight and still think this is its most important function.”
